PRESENTING THE UNACCEPTABLE:

LE PEN'S ELECTORAL TRACT FOR THE SECOND ROUND OF THE FRENCH PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION 2002

 

This article analyses the profession de foi of the extreme right National Front candidate for the second round of the 2002 French presidential election. The analytical framework used is that of Systemic Functional Linguistics. The document contains intertextual links which are surprising given the political stance of the candidate. He makes great use of vocatives which have high interpersonal but low ideational value. Use of negative imperatives treats the reader as a potential Affected rather than as an Actor. Grammatical metaphor gives some content the status of presupposition. The document as a whole is an appeal with little overt content.
